Department of Entomology and Collection
Management
provides studies in:
Faunistics, taxonomy, zoogeography, ecology and ecology
of the most important groups of insects of terrestrial (and some aquatic)
biocenoses in Ukraine and adjusting territories.
Current
Projects:
Entomofauna of the ground and its changes.
Systematics, morphology and faunistics of the moths
and butterflies (Lepidoptera).
Systematics, faunistics and phylogenetics of the flies
and mosquitoes (Diptera).
Systematics, morphology and faunistics of the beetles
(Coleoptera).
Systematics and faunistics of the bugs (Hemiptera).
Systematics and faunistics of the aphids and cycads
(Homoptera).
The Department History:
The Department of Entomology was established as an independent
division in 1962. However, entomological studies had been conducted
since the time of establishing the Zoological Museum in 1919 and were
advanced since the Institute of Zoology was established in 1930. At
that time, such eminent entomologists as Vladimir A. Karavajev (the
head of the Department of Fauna and Systematics in 1930-1938), Ivan
I.Zhikharev, V.M.Artobolevsky, and Ivan D. Belanovsky (head of the Department
since from 1958 to 1958) were working in the field of entomology.
Since the Deparment was organized in 1959 and up to
1975, Vasily G. Putshkov ran it; and from 1975 to 2004 it was directed
by Vladimir G. Dolin; in 2004–2007 Vladimir N. Stovbchaty was the acting
head of the Department.
In 1986 a part of the Department of Entomology formed
an independent Department of Systematics of Entomophages and Ecological
Fundamentals of Biocontrol under the direction of Marina D. Zerova.
In 2002 the Department of Scientific Fund Collections directed by Aleksander
V. Putshkov was established based on the Department of Entomology.
In the past times, such known entomologists as Evgeny
N. Savchenko, Vera A. Mamontova, Valery M. Ermolenko, Anna Z. Osychnyuk,
Valentina N.Logvinenko, Tvgenija M. Tereznikova, Irina A. Fedorenko,
Tamara G. Zhdanova, Yuri P. Nekrutenko, and others, worked at the Department.
In the meantime, the scientists of the Department have
published 24 monographs in the “Fauna Ukrainy” series. Ten Doctors of
Sciences and 27 Philosophy Doctors were trained and then defended their
degrees at the Department.
(History in Details)
The
Department Nowadays:
Now, four PhD students are training at the Department
and 2 employees are preparing their doctoral theses.
The main projects of the Departments now are in the
faunistics, ecology, taxonomy, zoogeography and phylogenetics of different
insect groups of the faunas of Ukraine, Europe, the Palearctic Region
and the World. Two Doctors of Sciences and 11 Philosophy Doctors, 2
Junior Research Scientists and 3 Engineers are working here.
