The studies in developmental biology were among
the most significant directions of the studies in the Schmalhausen
Institute of Zoology. In 1963, the Department of Cytology and
Histogenesis was separated from the Department of Evolutionary
Morphology and established as the separate division of the Institute
under the supervision of P. M. Mazhuga (the Director of the Institute
in 1963-1965). The scientists of the Department studied the mechanisms
of histogenesis and organogenesis in terrestrial vertebrates.
Later, the studies of morphofunctional adaptations and their disorders
under certain environmental factors were started too. P. M. Mazhuga
was Head of the Department until 1988, and in 1988-2016 N. V.
Rodionova was Head of the Department. In 2016, the Department
of Cytology was reorganized as a Laboratory of Developmental Biology
and included to the Department of Evolutionary Morphology. O.
M. Yaryhin became an Acting Head of the Laboratory.
