The Ukrainian Bird Ringing Centre
History and Workers
The Ukrainian Bird Ringing Centre
of s has been established in accordance with decision of the Presidium
of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in May, 1992. The Centre
was established on the basis of the Laboratory of Ornithology
of I. I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology, where bird migrations
have been studied, in particular by means of banding, since1974.
Similar centres coordinate bird banding in many counties of the
world. Their activity includes research, management and other
coordination of activities related to bird banding; carrying out
ringing and corresponding studies; production and subsequent transferring
of rings to regional ringers; maintaining bird banding databases,
etc. In the former Soviet Union, the Bird Ringing Centre of Academy
of Sciences of the USSR was charged with these functions. After
collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, this Centre became
a subdivision of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1997 Ukraine
has been accepted as a full member in EURING (The European Union
for Bird Ringing).
