Curator V.M. Stovbchaty.

Department of Ethology and social biology of insects

1. Comparative Collection of Mollusk Shells Collected in the 30 km Zone of Alienation of The Chernobyl Atomic Power Station and other territories of Ukraine, Russia and Europe (~ 2000 samples). Molluscs were collected in 1986-1999 in the 30-km zone of the disaster, throughout the territory of the Ukraine and in the regions of some other countries suffering from radioactive precipitation, including some from western European countries. Over 1700 samples were analysed. Molluscs were identified to the generic level (no intrageneric variability in accumulation was noted). Samples were divided in generic subsamples; shells were pounded and stored in dry glass vials. The database provides site and date of collection, generic names, and specific beta-activity of strontium-90 above potassium-40 natural background. Same samples can be used for monitoring of heavy metals and rare earths.
